You are my… density.

This title is a quote from “Back to the Future”, when Marty’s dad, George McFly is practicing what he is going to say to Marty’s mum, Lorraine at the Under the Sea dance.

This title is fitting because today we are boarding the Emerald Destiny for our journey from Amsterdam along the Rhine and Danube Rivers to Budapest.

We’re inside one of those cabins right now!

Before we boarded, we had our final fill of dutch pancakes…

And a final sit and stare at people…

And our final Dutch tiny car…

Then we boarded…

Our first Dutch inspired dinner… they put cranberries with EVERYTHING!

The first night was spent still docked in Amsterdam with this pretty view.

And we awoke to this foggy view…

Part of our cruise includes daily tours and today was a canal cruise through Amsterdam.

1: please note the little dog in the window. not sure how much he cost
2: little tiny sloping gap building
3: skinny building
4: you don’t want your port side light to be subtle
5: fancy brigde
6: old fortress that they stuck a spire on top
7: leaning buildings
8: Someone is always watching

It’s like a portal to another dimension…

Our guide said there are about 1.2 million bikes in Amsterdam. Most adults have 2 bikes each in case one is broken, stolen or thrown in the canal, then they have a spare at the ready.

She also said that the canals are 3 metres deep. A metre of mud, a metre of water and a metre of bikes.

Because of the mud the water looks murky, but because of their filtration system, the water is actually quite clear – like a light chardonnay colour.

Wait! What?

Then check out this view… you can see 7 bridges through each other. (this one is not my photo though, because we were on the other side of the boat and the fog had gotten heavier)

Then is was back to the boat to get ready to head east. This was our view (sorry, I should have tried to line those pictures up. I hope it’s not as upsetting to you as it is to me)

Little towns with pretty autumn trees…

Long boats… a good idea to take your car with you so you can drive back.

Lot of trees and people on bikes… well, when I say ‘lots’, there’s one biker and one jogger in this section.

A smattering of graffiti & odd artworks…

And our first lock – the first of 68.
(This pic is from the bow cam… please don’t worry, I wasn’t strapped to the front of the boat like a figurehead!)

I did take a couple of riveting videos, but unfortunately they wouldn’t load… that will have to wait until the slide show when we get home.
