Look what we found just up the road…

Coffs Harbour was a funny disjointed sort of town, but we drove around and finally found the beach. She was a rough old sea and there were surfers a-plenty out there enjoying the swell. It was only a quick in and out as we had places to be and BIG things to see.

We kept seening signs for ‘Pet Porpoise Pool’… what was this? Was it a pool where you could pet porpoises? A pool with someone’s porpoise who was a family pet? Turns out it is part of a wildlife sanctuary, so we drove past and never met nor pet the porpoise.
And doesn’t ‘porpoise pet’ sound a lot like ‘porpoise pit’? And isn’t Coffs where Muriel’s Wedding was meant to be set? It would have been remiss of us….
When driving along the highway, I like to see a sign, make a split decision and take the exit… and this is what we did on this 40kms detour through Grafton and then the Scottish town of McLean along the huge Clarence River. This prompted Fliss to speak in a very inappropriate Scottish accent which after a while, she claimed, gave her a headache.
There are Scottish tartans painted on power poles the whole way along the main street through the town. Each year they put on the Scottish Highland Games and do a lot of Scottish celebrating.

Grafton was also very pretty, but we only drove through so I didn’t take any photos – but in my own memory, it was very pretty.
Then, we found this iconic BIG… thank you Ballina.

Ooooh, where to next?
