80 Mile Beach – Far Away in Time

I said goodbye to Broome and watched my last Broome sunset (for now). Picked up my sister, Jodie who was joining me from the depths of a Melbourne winter and we hit the road. Our first destination – 80 Mile Beach.

I’d never been to 80 Moile before, but people raved about how lovely it was.

The road in is a rough, corrugated 10kms, which seemed like 100kms when you’re driving a van like Fern. You don’t want to hit those bumps too hard lest your cabinets fall from the walls. But once we were there the caravan park – which is the only thing there, is lovely and the beach is amazing! This is super low tide.

We stayed in a cabin – well Jodie did and I stayed in my cosy Fern in the driveway.

We hit the beach for a little look around…

But retreated when we realised we were starving… Home for a ‘Duplex” dinner (this is when you eat dinner really early like my lovely friend Marie did when we were kids – Shirley Duplex, you were absolutely onto something back then)… so this was our first 80 Mile sunset from our cabin/driveway camp.

Day 2, we popped down to the beach again – now we didn’t know this, but you can’t swim here. Here is a list of things that can kill you at 80 Mile Beach… some might not kills you, but they would still scare the bejesus out of you if they popped up beside you in the water:

  • Box Jellyfish – a sting from one of these tentacles will kill you in 5 minutes.
  • Blue Ringed Octopus – one bite can cause total body paralysis.
  • Salt water Crocodile – no explanation needed.
  • Cone Shell – these little buggers hide in the sand with this needle like stinger sticking up and if you go near it, it can whip the weapon around and pierce you with venomous fluid that can cause death… that’s not what you want.
  • Sharks – they swim in the shallows chasing fish
  • Stingrays – probably just minding their business

I mean – where the hell do we live?

There are also Flatback Turtles, but you could probably get away from them if you needed to.

We took this partially buried warning sign quite seriously and wore shoes… not like this lady.

We watched where we walked intensely and collected some of the non deadly shells along the beach.

Then we watched the sun go down.

How lucky am I to have my big sister with me.

A little stairway to the sun.

And then the magic of the afterglow.
