This was my view today…

We actually turned off the Rhine River yesterday at the town of Mainz (pronounced Minez) and now we are on the Main River (pronounced Mine).

Our stop today is Würzberg.

And getting there was juts beautiful. I mean…. look!

It was like being in a real life Turner painting.

That’s Würzberg, over there, but first we have to get through this really pretty lock that sits under The Old Main Bridge…

It has been built in the same style as the Charles Bridge in Prague with statues of saints lining the top.

The lock part is on the right hand side… However, if you are rowing, you stay left.

The water through the bridge on the left is the upper part of the river which is flowing over into the lower part at several points and yet the water levels stay separate.

Did you know it was Leonardo di Vinci who invented the mitre lock system in 1497? A Mitre Lock is when 2 gates close in unison and meet at a 45 degree angle, so the water pressure actually closes them tighter and then when the water level is equal, they open easily. Genius. Those types of locks are still being used all through Europe and the UK, but there are other types of locks as well, which I won’t bore you with… you can click here if you would like to learn more.

And here’s The Old Main Bridge from the other side.

Once we docked up, we walked back towards the bridge. There were padlocks on each rung, they’re clearly trying to make the love lock thing happen here like the one in Paris, but they’ve got more room and less people.

Up on the bridge… not sure which saint this is, but I’m thinking he has a brand new sword and he’s pretty happy about it.

Here’s a better look at how the upper section is overflowing into the lower section.

On the bridge it is customary to purchase a souvenir wine glass and they will fill it (to the brim) with wein (wine). We didn’t think we needed that much on our way into town at 10.30am.

The town has more churches than you can poke a German sausage at.

This one, St Mary’s is on the main market square.
This square isn’t as quaint as other ones we’ve been to. It has a bit of a mixture of old and new.

Today is a Sunday, but there were only a handful of stalls. mainly selling kitchen utensils (like, half of the stalls were selling kitchen bits and pieces) or this one that sold popcorn.
Apparently the shops don’t open until 1pm on a Sunday… fair enough.

And then we sat for a coffee and cake and enjoyed this man’s hair curl… now do you think it’s natural? Could he have curled it purposefully – as a style? Either way, I’m loving this look for him.

On our way back to the ship, I decided to walk through the back streets. You never know what you’ll come across when you get off the main drag.
We actually didn’t find anything really of interest, (well, nothing I took a photo of) but it was a short cut, so… bonus!
