Charters Towers… Pentland… Hughenden… Julia Creek

Day 1 of the drive west… we arrived in Charters Towers, the first main town on the ‘Overlander’s Way’. Famous for its part in the gold rush in the late 19th century and that time was the second-largest city in Queensland. They called themselves “The World” because residents boasted it had everything anyone could ever need.

If you look closely, you can see Deb.

Deb – Queen of the Princess Di pose.

My pose looks like I’m in a school photo.

Mumma and Joey!

Pentland was a little tiny place with a lovely cafe/art studio/gallery called “Wookatook” run by Louise (the artist) and Graeme (the poet and cake baker)

We had a little drive around the 4 street town and a wander through the cemetery. The residents there had a beautiful view over the lake.

I love a good look around a cemetery – reading the names and the epitaphs. There were a lot of horse lovers buried here.

Next stop – Hughenden where we stayed for the night.

In Hughy, there’s a bit of history – both recent and Jurassic as this is part of the great dinosaur trail.

Before we could leave Hughenden though, we needed to do a little detour to Porcupine Gorge.

There is probably going to be a LOT of photos of Deb taking photos – she’s a photographer by trade and profession.

Pyramid Rock

Last destination for today – Julia Creek… but first, here’s Fern look fantastic on the road!

Julia Creek Caravan Park has outdoor baths! Amazing and the absolute best thing about Julia Creek.

If I could, I’d carry a bath with me in Fern.
